Origin

The Poodle originally comes from Germany, where it worked as a water retriever. It was first called Pudelhand, which means dog that splashes. Shortened to improve swimming ability, it possessed long hair for warmth and protection on the chest, joints, and tail tip.The appreciation of this breed as a companion began in France, where it was also used as a circus dog.

In France, the dog was bred to be smaller and its distinctive haircut was highlighted. The poodle gradually rose to prominence as France's mascot. Early poodles had wiry coats and were permitted to grow long, thin strands of hair, which were ultimately combed out. Around the 15th and 16th centuries, the poodle gained popularity in England.

The poodle has been bred in three common sizes, Standard, Miniature and Toy. The Standard Poodle is recognized by the American Kennel Club as the oldest of the three.

Characteristics

The standard poodle has oval eyes with an alert and intelligent expression. This dog has a long, finely chiseled muzzle and folded ears that sit close to its head. The paws are small and oval. The tail is usually straight, crested and erect. It is squarely built and well proportioned. The fur is available in the colors white, black, brown, silver and grey.

An adult Standard Poodle is approx. 30 cm tall with an average weight of 20-30 kg.

The poodle has a lifespan of 12 years.

Temperament

Standard poodles love play and adventure. This dog is active and loves to run, swim and play games of fetch. A Standard Poodle is good with other pets and children.

Miniature poodles are also friendly and obedient. They tend to be sensitive, attached to one person and shy of strangers. Miniature Poodles are generally friendly with other pets..

Training needs

All Poodles require regular mental and physical exercise. Standard poodles need long walks unlike the smaller breeds who are happy with short walks or indoor exercise.
