Is your cat pregnant?A cat's gestation period lasts approximately nine weeks. Female cats will often be in heat for six to nine days. However, you can always talk to a vet if you are in doubt. When your cat is pregnant, you must give her good food to cope with the litter that is on the way. When your cat is pregnant or lactating, consider increasing her intake of proteins, as she has to eat for more than one and the cute little kittens need a good start in life. Kittens are born blind and naturally take to the mother's teats for her milk pretty quickly. Good advice for pregnant & lacating catYou should be able to tell when your female cat is in heat or pregnant, as she will be attention-seeking and rolling around the floor quite a lot. Female cats may become restless and will not eat nearly as much as normal. It may be that she has started to meow louder and more often than usual.
If you are about to welcome a litter of kittens, you can prepare by getting a good cat bed for the mother cat, as she needs to be able to sleep comfortably with the new ones in the family. Make sure that the cat bed is in a place where there is not too much traffic in the house and that the mother cat and kittens can rest peacefully.
A pregnant cat typically needs more food. It is advisable to provide a different type of cat food for the mother cat if she does not want to eat the regular dry food. Having good water and food bowls ready for the mother cat and the future litter is also essential.
Dry food or wet food for your pregnant catMost cat owners give their cats dry food regularly, as it is often the cheapest. But is not always the best.
