Are you ready for summer and the warm temperatures? In any case, your dog depends on you having prepared well. The summer heat brings with it many joys but also other challenges that you need to be aware of as a dog owner. Especially being able to cool your dog down is incredibly important to be ready for.
Here you can read more about the important summer equipment for your dog that can help with lots of summer play, help to cool your dog down and good advice to avoid dehydration.
How can you cool your dog down?
Since your dog naturally has a thick coat that aims to keep warm, it can also be difficult for the dog to get rid of the heat again. Therefore, it is important to be aware that your dog may sometimes need help to bring the body temperature down a little.
Fortunately, there are many methods and a lot of dog equipment that can help you cool your dog down. A cooling mat that the dog can lie on is a really good thing to have both inside and outside when the temperature reaches its peak. It is not always certain that shade is enough, but a cooling mat that is set to a specific temperature can help make the difference.
In addition, water is of course very important in the summer. Just like us humans, your dog needs a lot more liquid when the sun is baking. Therefore, be sure that the dog bowl is filled with fresh water, so that your dog always has somewhere to find liquid.
The water can also be used for other purposes than drinking. If you have a large tub or a dog pool, it is also a really good way to cool your dog down. A quick dip in the summer weather is not just a good way to cool the dog down, it can also invite play and high spirits. Even though it's hot, there should still be plenty of time for play and activity as long as you pay attention to the dog.
What other summer equipment should you have ready for the dog?
In addition to being able to cool your dog down, there are also other things you should be aware of when the weather gets better. Summer, dog and heat are a good combination for fleas and ticks, and it is therefore a good idea to have the necessary summer equipment and to make good preparations before summer hits.
Tick remover and flea treatment can be a really good thing to have on hand since in the summer you spend a large part of your time outdoors with the dog. And this is where the ticks and fleas strike, which can be a great irritation for the dog and even carry nasty diseases with them, which can be transferred to your dog. Therefore, pay extra attention to these during the summer.
Always check your dog when you have been out for a walk. Especially if you have been in fields, a football field, or in forest areas, as the ticks hide in the long grass. If you discover a tick on your dog, you should react as quickly as possible but at the same time remove it completely correctly so that the tick's head does not remain stuck in the skin.
In addition, remember to bring water for the dog during the walk. When it's hot, it may be too far home, and your dog may need fluids during your walk. It is therefore a good idea to have a water bottle with you so that you can cool your dog down when you are out walking. At the same time, pay extra attention to the asphalt during your walk. It can be very hot and hurt your dog.
Plenty of fluids for your dog in the summer
Having access to fresh water is incredibly important to cool a dog down in the summer. However, if you are in doubt as to whether the accident is over and your dog may be suffering from dehydration, there are some dehydration tips you should follow. You can first of all start by gently pulling up the skin on the dog's neck. The skin wanted to lie down quietly again. If this is not the case, and the nape of the neck is almost standing still, it may be a sign that your dog is dehydrated and you need to cool your dog down as soon as possible.
You can also check the dog's gums. The gums should be smooth and wet. If you gently press on the gums, under normal conditions the gums will turn white and then return to the normal pink color. If this is not the case, you should find water for the dog and try to cool it down.
If it has not worked to cool the dog down, and you sense that your dog is getting worse, you should always contact a vet. Then you are sure to get the correct advice so that your dog can cool down and feel good again.
